Galaxy 99v with reciever hiss

Hello , I have a Galaxy DX 99v which has hardly been used, and never in a mobile. I put it away in the closet a few years ago since sun spot cycle was bad, and nothing on 10 meters. Radio was working great.

I recently took it out and hooked it up to the power supply, (35Amp) and it plays fine with the exception of a very loud hissing noise on the reciever which it did not have when I put it away.

Transmit is fine, display is great, not much activity in my area but I can hear CH 19 and the truckers sound ok however the hiss is always there, and the hissing noise is also on Upper and Lower Sideband and I know it shouldnt be there.

I saw a Galaxy update on the web, it said Problem: Excessive Noise on Reciever, low sensitivity. Solution : resolder C69 to pcb.

I havent opened it up yet, but does anyone know if this sounds like a common problem? Maybe cold solder joint? The radio works great with the exception of that hissing noise. I bought this radio new back in 1998 I believe it was.

hello,,,welcome to the forum.....aint trying to be a smart *ss,,,but you do have your anl/nb switch on right.....if not,,youll always have some noise in the receive,,especially in day-time,,skip is bad right now,you know.....

this is a possibility that could cause the hiss.people may not be hearing it in trans.

Hello again, and thanks for the replies on my radio. Ramblinman, Yes the Noise blanker was on. I use this radio on my desk as a base, and I've been in radio since 1973, when my first CB was a SBE Sidebander II with only 23 channels. I then became a Ham operator in 1977, and have been tinkering with Ham radios, and CB rigs for several years off and on but since I retired I dont have the test equipment anymore, I can solder, and have a digital Volt Ohm meter and thats about it.

I know this radio has a problem, and I know that noise is common on AM band on the CB. There is no buzzing sound on it at all just hissing type of noise to the point where I had to run up the squelch to quiet it down.
People have told me that my Transmit audio is clean and free of any hum or buzzing, so there's no problem with the transmit side.

I also noticed now after dialing several channels that on some channels it will actually have a slight squeal to it , and the S Meter will go from 0 up to about a 9 with this reciever noise. The noise is definately not the normal atmospheric noise you hear normally as I have hooked up my Old trusty SBE right beside it and the SBE is almost totaly silent until someone keys up to talk out there.

Anyhow I think my Galaxy is going to need a good CB repair shop thats reasonable but looking around on the internet I dont see that there are hardly any still in business. This is a shame as back in the days when CB was all the rage there were CB shops on every street corner almost.

Can anyone recommend any good Galaxy Repair places I might contact?

I took the covers off and did a routine check of all the components with a plastic tool lightly pressing on the caps, transistors etc, to see if there were any loose parts but couldnt find anything wrong visually. I examined the underside of the PCB with a magnifier, and I dont see any joints that are bad, they all see soldered pretty clean and tight, but theres a chance there might be a bad one. Im thinking its got a bad capacitor somewhere in it maybe.

Thankyou for the warm welcome, Im glad I found this forum, and I still use 11 meters even though I talk on the HF ham bands etc. CB is still a great hobby as far as I'm concerned.

Now to locate a good CB repair shop !!

have you tried talking to any of the truck drivers thru your area.they should know where a CB shop is at for they frequent them often.

Nicholas440 i have a galaxy 99v that was doing what you described but my radio was only doing this on channel 13 it was as if someone was holding a carrier on this channel so i done the 10 meter mod. and realigned the pll section and it took care of the problem not for sure if this will help you but it may be worth checking in to. There is a post on page 2 where others helped me with this problem its listed under Galaxy 99v problems good luck with your radio you have come to the right forum for help because there is a lot of good information here and a lot of nice people willing to help.
